Self-Medication in Nigeria

Self-Medication in Nigeria: Why It Happens and How to Stay Safe.

Self-medication means consuming medication without proper medical advice. It is very common occurrence in Nigeria, and while some cases are harmless, many can be dangerous.
People self-medicate for different reasons: hospitals are expensive, medical care queues are long, and many believe they already know what to buy. Some also rely on the internet or advice from friends and family.

Unfortunately, this can lead to taking the wrong drug, using the wrong dose, or combining medicines that should never be combined. Common examples include taking antibiotics without prescription, using painkillers too often, or giving children adult medicines. Misusing antibiotics can make them less or inactive, creating “antibiotic resistance,” which is a serious global problem.

To stay safe, people should ask a Pharmacist before buying medication. A short conversation can prevent major problems. It is also important to avoid buying drugs from unregistered shops or roadside sellers, because fake medicines are common.

Self-medication may seem easy, but it can cause harm. It is always safer to ask a qualified Professional before taking any medicine.
